WHAT DO YOU REGARD AS THE LOWEST DEPTH OF MISERY?Homelessness - which is so much more than just not having a roof - it is about isolation, loneliness, no love, no family, exclusion, marginalisation.
WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO LIVE? A city which bustles with life and creativity like Barcelona or St. Petersburg AND a small isolated village by the sea.
WHAT IS YOUR IDEA OF EARTHLY HAPPINESS? Walking along a deserted Scottish coastline in autumn with my wife.
TO WHAT FAULTS DO YOU FEEL MOST INDULGENT? I forgive absolutely all those dreamers with grand plans which appear impracticable.
YOUR FAVORITE HEROES OF FICTION? George Smiley (the master spy), Scrooge (it’s possible to change completely), Sherlock Holmes, Gandalf, Philip Marlowe.
YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTERS IN HISTORY? Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Dickens, Scott of the Antarctic, Sir Edmund Hilary, Carnegie, Mandela (still living).
